If you are planning to open a new School or College facility, or considering the refit of an existing premise, it is important to consider an number of key requirements.
I have designed and fitted interiors and providing Reception Furniture for Healthcare, Education, Retail and Commercial premises since 1976 and in that time we have come across a large variety of interior arrangements and fitted some extra ordinary building shapes. In my experience however, many of our early stage enquiries regarding the Reception areas have not taken into account some very fundamental points.
Dimensions of the room
-So often there is an expressed need for a desk arrangement which takes no account of the space the desk itself occupies.
Location of entrances and exits
- It is so important to account for the flow of traffic through the room
Positioning of the Reception Desk
- All sorts of factors influence this, not least the comfort of the staff who need to sit at the desk
Number of staff to be seated at the desk
- Making an arrangement which is adequate for persons and the machinery and storage they need.
Whether there is a requirement for Disabled access (DDA)
- It may not be necessary where there is no requirement to meet with someone in a wheelchair or where wheelchair access is impossible for the room involved, e.g. stairs only access to a first floor room.
Is visitor seating to be provided
- If so how many?
Are retail goods or other items to be displayed? Is the desk to be straight or shaped and if so angled or curved
- Curved desks can look great but need space.
Key colours, materials and finishes required.
Giving the designer or supplier of Reception furniture these details will guarantee the whole process of design and costings being straight forward.
To provide the best of both worlds, a standard tried and tested modular reception desk format is often used but the desk itself is custom built.
Marrying the precision of modular desk manufacture with custom designs results in high quality reception desks with individual design features, all at competitive prices.
Schools and colleges particularly require very durable materials to account for high traffic levels. It is important that any area continues to look good long into the future.
The Reception design is probably the most important phase in any School or College development.
It must combine the total package of effective use of space, environmental factors involving surface finishes, lighting and IT provisions along with quality seating to provide the right ambiance and a quality experience for all visitors.
Choice of the right partner to achieve the result you desire can be a time consuming and sometimes costly exercise. It is important to know that there is understanding and experience along with a flair capable of achieving the best result for you. I guess the best way of judging this is to discover whether your prospective partner begins the process by asking the right questions.
